Poverty-reduction and mental health improvement in South-western China through Astronomy

The main goal of this project is poverty-reduction and mental health improvement in South-western China through astronomy. The target audiences are left-behind adolescents and their parents, science teachers in local schools. Our targets include 1. train teachers with basic astronomy knowledge and research English. 2. train teachers on how to provide psychology aid to left-behind adolescents. 3. introduce career path in astronomy to students.  The execution of this project in the county where the world’s largest filled-aperture radio telescope is located provides an excellent opportunity to achieve the project goals (the schools, students, local government are already exposed to the regional economic impact of the telescope, and infrastructure is available).

c). Youth Astronomical Teacher LianXian

It is a project initiated in 2016 which aims to provide the best astronomical education source to the high school students. It provides opportunities for professional research experience to the school students who have strong interests in astronomy. It has successfully fulfilled the goals in 2016 and 2017. Details are seen in the pdf attached. I join this project in 2018-2019. This year, we are cooperating with a global telescopes network LCO to apply for the observing time. We will supervise 11high students to finish different observation projects from stars to galaxies. The aim is to teach them the basic astronomical observing knowledge and skills, moreover, to cultivate the innovative and creative thinking of them in science.
